How SRT is improving access to movement and community

For many in Shetland, leisure centres are more than just buildings – they’re lifelines. Yet, sport and sporting facilities can feel like an exclusive club, especially for those on low incomes or facing barriers. SRT, with over £3million in annual SCT funding, set out to change that.

After listening to communities across the isles, SRT launched a new membership scheme and the Access2Leisure Programme. Now, over a thousand Shetlanders who might once have felt excluded due to low income, health, or mobility issues have a free membership and can join an activity for just £1 a session. Each visit is a chance to build mental and physical strength, make friends, and feel a sense of belonging. For families, what was once a rare treat, is now a regular part of life. Children can build skills and confidence in a welcoming space, while parents know they’re giving their kids the chance to thrive. In just six months, Access2Leisure members made 9,501 visits, an average of 52 visits every day across SRT’s eight sites.

SRT accompanied Access2Leisure with a dramatic reduction in their standard membership costs, including a more family friendly pricing package, while also increasing the number of activities included for free. Membership overall has soared from just over 1,200 before the pandemic to more than 4,300, a 258% increase.

Nearly a quarter of Shetland’s population is now active through SRT’s inclusive memberships. For many, these changes have meant the difference between staying home and improved connection and wellbeing, as one user put it “I am stronger, fitter, healthier, and happier… I really would be lost without it”. And the benefits ripple out – confidence grows, friendships form, and the whole community feels stronger.

None of this would be possible without SCT’s ongoing support, which keeps these vital community spaces open and welcoming for all. As SRT’s Chief Executive, Robert Geddes, puts it “With SCT’s support, the original vision for SRT – facilities across the isles where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy movement and community – is truly thriving.”
