Shetland Arts’ Story
There’s something powerful about seeing an idea take flight. In Shetland, creativity is everywhere – from music and dance to knitting, painting, and performance – but turning inspiration into reality often needs a little help. That’s where Shetland Arts comes in.
Shetland Arts has become a cornerstone of the islands’ creative life, bringing concerts, exhibitions, workshops, and festivals that, without SCT support, would not be possible. But perhaps nothing captures the role and impact of Shetland Arts quite like the Creative Shetland Commissioning Fund. Launched during the pandemic and now a core programme, the Fund gives artists, whether starting out or well established, the chance to bring their ideas to life, with financial backing, access to facilities and equipment, a supportive community, and expert mentoring.
Artists are commissioned to create new work – ranging from an educational and inspiring edible peat bog installation to singing groups, photography, and spoken word. Each commission is more than a one-off event: it’s a seed, planted in Shetland’s creative soil, that grows into new skills, collaborations, and opportunities. The benefits reach far beyond the artist, touching audiences, participants, and the wider community.
The ripple effect is real. Artists gain confidence from being invested in, develop their practice, and go on to share what they’ve learned: running workshops, performing at festivals, developing products, or inspiring others to try something new. Community members experience art rooted in Shetland’s landscape and stories, and sometimes even take part themselves. Success and learning are shaping the Fund’s future, with new categories to support even more diverse creativity.
With each new project, Shetland Arts helps creative energy spread a little further, making Shetland a place where ideas, and people, can grow.
